Rambouillet Combed Top Driftwood
The Rambouillet breed was developed over a 200 year period in the Rambouillet region of France originating from a flock of Spanish Merino purchased by Louis XVI of France in 1786 from his cousin King Charles III of Spain. The Spanish Merino were crossed with English long wools to produce sheep that are larger in size and with a higher yielding fleece with a longer staple length. Rambouillet sheep have been significant in the development of the Australian Merino and the American Blackbelly or Barbado sheep.
